How NOL Card Refunds Work

RTA Dubai allows any NOL card holder to surrender their card and receive the remaining balance as a refund — minus the AED 5 non-refundable card issuance fee charged at original purchase. This fee covers the physical card production cost and is explicitly stated as non-refundable under RTA's NOL card terms. Every other dirham of remaining balance above AED 5 is returned in full with no additional charges.

There is no online refund option — the physical card must be surrendered in person at an RTA Customer Happiness Centre. This is a security requirement — RTA needs to physically deactivate the card to prevent the same balance being claimed twice. The process is same-day and no advance appointment is needed at most centres.

✅ What Is Refunded

Your full remaining balance minus AED 5 card fee. If card has AED 120 remaining → you receive AED 115. No other deductions or processing fees. Paid in UAE Dirhams cash same day.

✗ What Is NOT Refunded

The AED 5 card issuance fee — non-refundable under all circumstances. Any fares already used. Monthly pass fees already activated — passes are non-refundable once used.

How to Refund Your NOL Card Balance – Step by Step

  1. 1
Check your current balance before visiting — at nol.ae, NOL Pay app, or any metro TVM. Screenshot or note the exact amount to verify against your refund.
  2. 2
Visit any RTA Customer Happiness Centre — no appointment needed. Open Sunday to Thursday, 07:30–14:30. Closed Friday and Saturday.
  3. 3
Bring your NOL card and Emirates ID (UAE residents) or passport (tourists and visitors). Identity verification is required before processing.
  4. 4
Request card surrender and balance refund at the service counter. Staff calculate: remaining balance − AED 5 = your refund amount.
  5. 5
Receive refund — paid in UAE Dirhams cash. Some centres offer refund to original card payment method — confirm at counter.
  6. 6
Card deactivated and surrendered. Collect receipt as proof of refund transaction. Keep until refund is confirmed received.

How Much Will You Get Back? – Refund Calculation Table

Remaining Balance Card Fee Deducted Refund Amount Worth Refunding?
AED 4.00 AED 5.00 AED 0 — below minimum No — use balance first
AED 10.00 AED 5.00 AED 5.00 Marginal
AED 25.00 AED 5.00 AED 20.00 Yes
AED 50.00 AED 5.00 AED 45.00 Yes
AED 100.00 AED 5.00 AED 95.00 Yes — worth the visit
AED 200.00 AED 5.00 AED 195.00 Definitely yes
AED 500.00 AED 5.00 AED 495.00 High priority — visit today
Tourist tip: If you have AED 15 or less remaining and are departing tomorrow, use the balance on your airport metro journey instead of visiting an RTA centre. The refund process takes 30–45 minutes including travel — worth it for AED 30+ remaining balance, not for small amounts.

Alternatives to Refunding — Better Options for Small Balances

🚌 Use Up the Balance

Take a few extra bus or metro trips before leaving — use remaining credit on airport metro, last-day sightseeing, or bus rides. Most efficient option for balances under AED 25 where the refund amount barely justifies the RTA centre visit.

🎁 Give the Card Away

NOL cards are fully transferable — give your card with remaining balance to any Dubai resident or another tourist. No paperwork or formality required. The recipient uses it immediately on any RTA transport.

💳 Keep for Next Visit

Silver NOL card is valid for 10 years — balance stays intact. If you plan to return to Dubai, keep the card in your travel wallet. Skip the refund entirely and have a ready-loaded card waiting for your next trip.

Frequently Asked Questions — NOL Card Refund

How do I get a refund on my NOL card?
Visit any RTA Customer Happiness Centre in person (Sunday–Thursday, 07:30–14:30) with your NOL card and Emirates ID or passport. Request a card surrender and balance refund at the counter. You receive your remaining balance minus AED 5 card fee — same day, in cash. There is no online refund option — physical card surrender is required.
How much is deducted when refunding a NOL card?
Only the AED 5 non-refundable card issuance fee is deducted. No other fees or processing charges apply. If your card has AED 80 remaining, you receive AED 75. The AED 5 deduction applies regardless of how much balance you have or how long you have held the card.
Can I refund my NOL card online?
No. NOL card refunds require an in-person visit to an RTA Customer Happiness Centre — the physical card must be surrendered and deactivated on the spot. Online or app-based refunds are not available. Visit rta.ae for the nearest Customer Happiness Centre to your location.
Can tourists get a NOL card refund at Dubai Airport?
There is no RTA Customer Happiness Centre inside Dubai Airport terminals. The nearest centre to the airport is in Umm Ramool. If departing and wanting a refund, visit an RTA centre at least a few hours before your flight — allow 45–60 minutes. Alternatively use remaining balance on the airport metro journey or give the card to another traveller.
Can I get a refund on an expired NOL card?
Yes. Expired NOL cards with remaining balance can be brought to any RTA Customer Happiness Centre — staff can either renew the card (AED 25 renewal fee, balance preserved) or process a full refund (balance minus AED 5 card fee). Bring the expired card and your Emirates ID. Balance is never lost due to card expiry alone.
What happens to my monthly pass if I refund my NOL card?
Monthly pass fees are non-refundable once activated — the pass value cannot be surrendered for cash. The card's remaining prepaid balance (separate from the pass) can be refunded at AED 5 deduction. If your monthly pass has not yet been activated, contact RTA on 800 9090 to enquire about pre-activation cancellation options.
