How to Check Your Balance in 3 Steps

The whole process takes under 30 seconds using the tool above.

Find Your Tag ID

Flip your NOL card over and look for the 10-digit Tag ID printed below the barcode or chip area. This is your card's unique identifier in the RTA system. Older cards may show 14 digits — use only the final 10.

Enter & Submit

Type the Tag ID into the field above without spaces or dashes, then tap "Check Balance." The tool connects securely to the official nol.ae portal and processes your request.

Read Your Result

The portal returns your current balance, any pending top-up credit, and card expiry date. You can also view your last 10 transactions or start a top-up directly from that screen.

Each Method Explained Step by Step

Pick the option that fits your situation. Each walkthrough takes under a minute.

Checking via the RTA Website

The RTA website connects directly to the live balance database and works on any browser, on any device. It is the most reliable online method for users who prefer not to install an app.

  1. Open rta.ae in your browser.
  2. Navigate to Public Transport → NOL → Check NOL Balance.
  3. Enter the 10-digit Tag ID from the back of your card.
  4. Click Search.
  5. Your balance, pending credit, and card expiry date appear on screen.

If the result doesn't load, confirm you entered the Tag ID only — not the full 14-digit card number. Older cards show 14 digits, but the active identifier is always the final 10 printed below the barcode.

Checking with Your Card Number Only

The terms "card number" and "Tag ID" refer to the same 10-digit identifier. You do not need a PIN, security code, or registered account for a simple balance enquiry. The tool at the top of this page works identically to the RTA website.

  1. Locate the Tag ID on the back of your NOL card, printed below the chip or barcode.
  2. Enter it into the balance tool above or on the RTA website.
  3. Type without spaces or dashes and submit.

Personal (registered) cards show the cardholder name alongside the balance. Anonymous Silver and Gold cards display only the balance and expiry — by design, since they are not linked to an Emirates ID.

Checking via SMS — No Internet Required

SMS is the most practical offline option. It works on any UAE mobile network with zero internet — useful underground at a metro platform or in a low-signal area.

  1. Open your messaging app.
  2. First-time only: send your full 14-digit NOL Tag ID to 511 to register your mobile number.
  3. You'll receive a confirmation reply within seconds.
  4. After registration, send BAL to 511 anytime for an instant balance update.

Standard SMS rates from your carrier apply. The reply includes your current balance and any pending top-up amount.

Checking via the NOL Pay App

NOL Pay is the official RTA card management app. It replaced several older apps in 2024 and supports NFC scanning, virtual cards on Samsung devices, family card management, and instant top-ups with no activation delay.

  1. Download NOL Pay from the App Store, Google Play, or Huawei AppGallery.
  2. Sign in with your UAE Pass or create an RTA account.
  3. Tap Check Card Info.
  4. Enable NFC, then hold your card against the back of your phone.
  5. Balance, passes, and transaction history appear immediately.

If your phone does not support NFC, type the Tag ID manually inside the app. iPhone users currently need the manual entry route — Apple Wallet integration is not yet available as of April 2026.

Checking at Metro Stations and Ticket Vending Machines

Every Dubai Metro station, tram stop, and major bus terminal has a ticket vending machine (TVM). These machines read Silver and Gold cards, display the balance on screen, and let you top up in the same transaction.

  1. Walk up to any TVM at a metro or bus station.
  2. Tap your NOL card on the contactless reader panel marked with the NOL logo.
  3. The screen shows your current balance, pending credit, and expiry date.
  4. To top up, select Recharge, enter an amount (minimum AED 20), and pay by card or cash.

Vending machines also serve as activation points — tapping here forces any pending online top-up onto the card chip immediately, without making a journey.

Checking at Authorized Retail Outlets

Thousands of retail locations across Dubai — ZOOM stores, Carrefour outlets, ENOC and EPPCO fuel stations, and convenience stores near metro stations — can check and top up your card on the spot.

  1. Visit the nearest authorized NOL merchant (look for the NOL logo at the till).
  2. Hand your card to the cashier and request a balance check.
  3. They tap it on the in-store reader.
  4. The balance shows on the terminal screen or prints on a receipt.

Most outlets also handle top-ups with a minimum of AED 20. This is the simplest option for residents who live far from a metro station.

Checking via Mahboub on WhatsApp

Mahboub is RTA's AI assistant available on WhatsApp and the S'hail app. It responds in English or Arabic and handles balance checks, top-ups, pass renewals, and refund requests without a phone call.

  1. Save +971 58 800 9090 to your contacts.
  2. Open WhatsApp and send "Hi" or "Check NOL balance."
  3. Mahboub asks for your NOL Tag ID.
  4. Enter the 10-digit number. Your balance appears in the chat within seconds.

Mahboub is especially useful for visitors who prefer not to install the NOL Pay app during a short stay in Dubai.

The NOL Pay app transfers the balance immediately with no activation step.

How to Top Up Your NOL Card

Eight official top-up channels are available — choose based on how urgently you need the credit and where you are.

Minimum top-up amounts vary by channel: AED 5 through the NOL Pay app, AED 20 on the website and at TVMs, and AED 50 at metro station ticket offices (raised from AED 20 in August 2024).

NOL Pay App — Instant, No Activation Delay

Open the app, select your card, choose an amount from AED 5 upward, and pay by credit card or Apple Pay. For physical cards, tap the card on your phone's NFC reader after payment to write the balance to the chip. Available immediately — no activation tap at a station required.

RTA Website — 45 Minutes to 4 Hours to Activate

Log in at rta.ae, go to NOL Services → Top Up, enter the Tag ID and amount, then pay online. After payment, tap your card at any metro gate or parking meter to activate the pending credit. You do not need to make a journey — any reader will do.

Ticket Vending Machines — Immediate Activation

Tap your card on the TVM reader, select Recharge, enter an amount (minimum AED 20), and pay by card or cash. Balance is written to the chip during the transaction — no waiting and no follow-up tap needed. Best when you need money on the card right now.

Authorized Retailers — ZOOM, ENOC, Carrefour

Over 2,000 retail outlets handle NOL top-ups across Dubai. Hand your card to the cashier, specify the amount (minimum AED 20), and pay at the till. Balance is active immediately after the transaction.

Metro Station Ticket Offices — Minimum AED 50

Walk-in top-ups at metro station counters now require a minimum of AED 50. Staff process and activate the top-up on the spot — useful if you do not have access to a phone or TVM.

S'hail App & Mahboub on WhatsApp

Both the S'hail journey planner and the Mahboub WhatsApp bot (+971 58 800 9090) support top-ups through their payment modules. The same activation rule applies as the website — tap your card at a reader after payment to transfer the pending balance to the chip.

Renew Your NOL Card or Replace a Lost One

Silver, Gold, and Blue cards are valid for 5 years. Red tickets expire after 90 days. Renewal and replacement are both handled through the NOL Pay app, TVMs, or ticket offices.

Renewing Before the Card Expires

The NOL Pay app sends a reminder 30 days before your card expires. To renew, open the app, select the expiring card, and tap Renew. Renewal costs AED 25 for Silver and Gold, AED 70 for Blue. Your remaining balance, passes, and NOL Plus points all carry forward to the renewed card automatically.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Card

Only cards registered to a personal account (tied to an Emirates ID) can be recovered. If your registered card is lost, open the NOL Pay app, tap the card entry, and select Report Lost. RTA blocks the old card immediately. A replacement is issued with your balance transferred — the fee is AED 25 and delivery takes 5 to 7 business days to any Dubai address.

Anonymous Silver and Gold cards offer no recovery option — once lost, the balance is forfeited. This is the main practical reason to register every card with your Emirates ID. Registration is free and also raises the maximum stored balance from AED 1,000 to AED 5,000.

Pros & Cons of the NOL Card

An honest look at what works well and what to know before you rely on the card.

✓ What Works Well

  • One card covers everything — Metro, bus, tram, water bus, taxi, and parking on a single tap.
  • Eight top-up channels including offline SMS, app, TVMs, and retail outlets.
  • Cheaper than cash — per-zone fares are lower and cash is not accepted on most services anyway.
  • Registered cards are recoverable — lost balance is protected when tied to your Emirates ID.
  • Five-year validity — minimal administration for long-term residents.
  • NOL Plus loyalty rewards — earn points on every eligible ride, top-up, and purchase.
  • 50% discount for eligible groups — students, seniors, and people of determination pay half-fare with the Blue card.

✕ Limitations to Know

  • Anonymous cards carry no protection — lose an unregistered card and the balance is gone permanently.
  • Website top-ups need an activation tap — not immediately usable after online payment.
  • Red tickets expire in 90 days — not practical for stays longer than three months.
  • Gold Class costs roughly double — the upgraded cabin has a clear fare premium per journey.
  • iPhone NFC integration is incomplete — Apple Wallet support not yet available as of April 2026.
  • Dubai-only — the card has no value outside the emirate.
  • Station top-up minimum raised to AED 50 — changed from AED 20 in August 2024.

What Is a NOL Card?

A quick overview for first-time users and visitors to Dubai.

The NOL card — Arabic: نول, meaning "fares" — is a prepaid contactless smartcard issued by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). It launched alongside the Dubai Metro in August 2009 and has since become the standard payment method for all public transport in the city. Cash is not accepted as an alternative on the metro or most bus services.

The card processes over 1.5 million transactions daily across more than 55 metro stations, 11 tram stops, all RTA bus routes, water bus terminals, and paid parking meters. It also works at thousands of retail and fuel outlets across Dubai.

NOL Plus — Dubai's Transit Loyalty Programme

NOL Plus is the first public transport loyalty scheme in the Middle East. Registered cardholders earn points on every ride, top-up, and retail purchase made with the card. Points redeem for free trips, discounted passes, and partner offers at Emaar and Majid Al Futtaim outlets. Enrolment is free through the NOL Pay app.

Account-Based Ticketing — Coming in 2026

RTA is rolling out Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) with a full transition expected by end of 2026. Under ABT, your fare is linked to an account rather than the physical chip — meaning any contactless bank card or smartphone can be used at the gate. Existing NOL cards continue working throughout the transition and beyond.

RTA Customer Support

For issues that the self-service tool or app cannot resolve, RTA provides multiple contact options.

If an online top-up does not activate within 24 hours, call the hotline with your Tag ID and payment reference number — support can push the pending amount to your card during the call.

  • 24/7 Hotline: 800 90 90 — balance issues, lost cards, top-up failures
  • Email: ask@rta.ae — responses within one to two business days
  • WhatsApp (Mahboub): +971 58 800 9090 — balance checks, top-ups, refund requests
  • Walk-in centres: Al Barsha, Deira, Umm Ramool, Al Kifaf — card replacements, balance refunds, disputes
  • Social: @rta_dubai on X, Instagram, and Facebook for public queries

Common Questions

Answers to the questions Dubai commuters and visitors ask most often.

What is the NOL Tag ID and where do I find it?
The Tag ID is a 10-digit number printed on the back of every NOL card, just below the barcode or chip area. It is your card's unique identifier and is required for all online balance lookups. Older cards may display 14 digits — use only the final 10.
How do I check my NOL card balance online?
Enter your 10-digit Tag ID into the tool at the top of this page, or visit rta.ae and go to Public Transport → NOL → Check NOL Balance. Both methods return your current balance, pending credit, and expiry date within seconds.
Can I check my NOL card balance by SMS without internet?
Yes. Register once by sending your Tag ID to 511, then send BAL to 511 anytime for an instant balance reply — no internet required. Works on any UAE mobile network including underground at metro platforms.
How do I top up my NOL card in Dubai?
Top up through eight channels: the NOL Pay app (instant, min. AED 5), the RTA website (min. AED 20, activation required), ticket vending machines (min. AED 20, immediate), ticket offices (min. AED 50), ZOOM/ENOC retailers, the S'hail app, the Mahboub WhatsApp bot, and solar-powered machines at bus stops. The NOL Pay app is fastest — no activation tap needed.
What are the Dubai Metro operating hours in 2026?
The Dubai Metro operates Saturday to Thursday from 5:00 AM to midnight, and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM. Hours are extended during Ramadan and major public events. Check rta.ae or the S'hail app for real-time updates.
What is the Gold NOL card price?
The Gold NOL card costs AED 25, which includes AED 19 in pre-loaded credit. It provides access to the Gold Class cabin on the metro and tram at approximately double the standard Silver fare. A Gold all-zones monthly pass costs around AED 700.
What is the price of a Silver, Blue, and Red NOL card?
The Silver card costs AED 25 (AED 19 credit included), the Blue card costs AED 70 (AED 20 credit included, 50% fare discount for eligible groups), and the Red ticket costs AED 2 and expires after 90 days. All prices are fixed by RTA and are the same at every sales channel.
What happens if my balance is too low to travel?
A balance below AED 7.50 will not open metro fare gates or allow boarding. Traveling without sufficient credit risks an AED 200 fine. Keep at least AED 15 on a Silver card to cover a standard return journey.
Can I view my NOL card transaction history?
Yes. Log in to rta.ae using UAE Pass and go to NOL Services → Check Balance and History. Up to 12 months of transactions are available — fares, top-ups, parking, and retail — with a CSV export option. Alternatively, send "NOL HISTORY" to 5110 by SMS for your last 10 transactions.
My balance is not updating after a top-up — what should I do?
Online top-ups remain "pending" until the credit is written to the card's chip. Tap your card at any metro gate, TVM, or parking meter within 45 minutes to 4 hours of completing the payment. If the balance still does not update after 24 hours, call 800 90 90 with your Tag ID and payment reference.
How do I check my NOL card expiry date?
Open the NOL Pay app and the expiry date displays directly below the balance on the card screen. It also appears after running an online balance check at the top of this page, and on any TVM screen when you tap your card.
How do I check my NOL Plus loyalty points?
Log into the NOL Pay app or rta.ae using UAE Pass, then open the NOL Plus section. Your total points, available rewards, and redemption history appear on one screen. Points accumulate automatically on every eligible ride, top-up, and retail purchase — no separate activation needed.
