Each Method Explained Step by Step

NOL Card Balance Check via RTA Website

The RTA website is the most reliable way to check your NOL card balance from a desktop or laptop. The system connects directly to the RTA database and returns your current balance, pending top-up, and card status in real time.

  1. Open rta.ae in your browser.
  2. Go to Public Transport → NOL → Check NOL Balance.
  3. Enter the 10-digit Tag ID printed on the back of your card.
  4. Click Search.
  5. Your balance, pending credit, and card expiry date appear on screen.

If the balance doesn't load, double-check the Tag ID — older cards use a 14-digit format, but the active ID is always the last 10 digits below the barcode.

NOL Card Balance Check with Number

If you only have your card number and no phone app, the Tag ID lookup works on both the RTA website and any ticket vending machine. The "NOL card number" and "NOL Tag ID" refer to the same 10-digit identifier — ignore any older guides that mention 14 digits.

  1. Find the Tag ID on the back of your NOL card, printed below the chip or barcode.
  2. Visit the RTA balance lookup page or use the tool at the top of this page.
  3. Type the number without spaces or dashes.
  4. Submit the form. Balance shows immediately.

Personal (registered) cards show your name alongside the balance. Anonymous Silver and Gold cards only show the balance and expiry date — this is by design, since anonymous cards aren't tied to an Emirates ID.

NOL Card Balance Check via SMS (Offline Method)

SMS is the fastest offline option. It works on any UAE mobile network with zero internet required — handy if you're underground at a metro platform or in a dead zone.

  1. Open your messaging app.
  2. For first-time use: type your full 14-digit NOL Tag ID and send it to 511 to register your mobile number.
  3. You'll get a confirmation SMS within a few seconds.
  4. After registration, just send BAL to 511 anytime you want a balance update.

Standard SMS rates from your mobile provider apply. The reply message includes your current balance and any pending top-up amount.

NOL Card Balance Check via NOL Pay App

The NOL Pay app is the official RTA app built specifically for card management. It replaced several older apps in 2024 and now supports NFC scanning, virtual cards on Samsung phones, family card management, and direct top-ups without activation delays.

  1. Download NOL Pay from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Huawei AppGallery.
  2. Sign in with your UAE Pass or create an RTA account.
  3. Open the app and tap Check Card Info.
  4. Enable NFC, then tap your physical card against the back of your phone.
  5. Balance, passes, and transaction history appear instantly.

If your phone doesn't support NFC, you can still check by typing the Tag ID inside the app. iPhone users currently need to scan manually — Apple Wallet integration hasn't rolled out yet.

NOL Card Balance Check at Metro Stations & Ticket Vending Machines

Every Dubai Metro station, tram stop, and major bus terminal has a ticket vending machine (TVM). These machines read both Silver and Gold cards, display the current balance on screen, and let you top up in the same transaction.

  1. Walk up to any TVM at a metro or bus station.
  2. Tap your NOL card on the contactless reader (usually a flat panel marked with the NOL logo).
  3. The screen shows your current balance, pending credit, and card expiry.
  4. To top up, select Recharge, enter an amount (minimum AED 20 at TVMs), and pay by card or cash.

This method also doubles as a free activation point — if you topped up online and the balance hasn't updated yet, tapping at a TVM forces the pending amount onto the chip immediately.

NOL Card Balance Check at Authorized Merchants & Retailers

NOL cards are accepted at thousands of retail points across Dubai — ZOOM stores, Carrefour outlets, ENOC fuel stations, and most convenience stores near metro stations. Any retailer with the NOL logo at the till can check your balance.

  1. Visit the nearest authorized NOL merchant.
  2. Hand your card to the cashier and ask for a balance check.
  3. They'll tap the card on the in-store reader.
  4. The balance prints on a receipt or shows on the terminal screen.

Most merchants also handle top-ups on the spot, with a minimum recharge of AED 20. This is the easiest option for residents who live far from a metro station.

NOL Card Balance Check via Mahboub Chatbot & WhatsApp

RTA launched Mahboub, its AI-powered chatbot, to handle common service queries without a phone call. It runs on the RTA website, the S'hail app, and over WhatsApp — and it answers in English or Arabic.

  1. Save the WhatsApp number +971 58 800 9090 to your contacts.
  2. Open WhatsApp, start a chat with Mahboub, and send "Hi" or "Check NOL balance."
  3. The bot will prompt you for your NOL Tag ID.
  4. Enter the 10-digit number. Your balance appears in the chat within a few seconds.

Mahboub can also top up your card, renew a pass, and apply for refunds — all inside WhatsApp. This is especially useful for visitors who don't want to install another app during a short trip.

How to Recharge Your NOL Card

Top-ups can be done online, through the NOL Pay app, at any vending machine, or at authorized retailers.

RTA accepts eight official top-up channels. The minimum varies by channel — AED 5 through the NOL Pay app, AED 20 on the website and TVMs, and AED 50 at metro station ticket offices (raised from AED 20 in August 2024).

Recharge via the NOL Pay App (Fastest)

The NOL Pay app processes top-ups instantly with no activation delay. Open the app, pick your card, choose an amount from AED 5 upward, and pay by credit card or Apple Pay. For physical cards, tap the card on your phone's NFC reader after payment to write the balance to the chip.

Recharge on the RTA Website

Log in at rta.ae, go to NOL Services → Top Up, enter the Tag ID and amount, and pay online. The website top-up shows as "pending" for 45 minutes to 4 hours — tap your card at any metro gate or parking meter to activate it before traveling.

Recharge at a Ticket Vending Machine

Every Dubai Metro and bus station has a TVM. Tap your card on the reader, select Recharge, enter an amount, and pay in cash or by card. Balance is written to the card immediately.

Recharge at ZOOM, ENOC & Authorized Retailers

More than 2,000 retail outlets across Dubai handle NOL top-ups, including ZOOM stores, ENOC and EPPCO fuel stations, Carrefour, and most supermarkets near metro stops. Hand your card to the cashier and ask for a recharge — minimum AED 20.

Recharge via S'hail App & Mahboub

The S'hail app (RTA's journey planner) also supports top-ups through its payment module. Mahboub, the WhatsApp chatbot at +971 58 800 9090, can process recharges after you send "top up NOL card" and provide the Tag ID plus amount.

Renew Your NOL Card or Replace a Lost One

All NOL cards are valid for 5 years (90 days for Red tickets). Renewal and replacement are handled online, at TVMs, or at ticket offices.

How to Renew Your NOL Card

You'll see a renewal prompt in the NOL Pay app 30 days before your card expires. Renewal costs AED 25 for Silver and Gold, AED 70 for Blue, and the new card inherits your remaining balance. Open the NOL Pay app, select the expiring card, tap Renew, and pay online. The physical card stays the same — RTA just extends the validity on the backend.

Replace a Lost or Stolen NOL Card

Only personal (registered) cards can be recovered. If your Blue card or registered Silver/Gold card is lost, log in to the NOL Pay app, tap the card, and choose Report Lost. RTA will block the old card and issue a replacement — your balance transfers automatically. The replacement fee is AED 25, and delivery takes 5 to 7 business days to any Dubai address.

Anonymous cards cannot be recovered — once lost, the balance is gone. This is why RTA recommends registering every Silver or Gold card with your Emirates ID, which also raises the maximum balance from AED 1,000 to AED 5,000.

  • Cheaper than cash. Cards get zonal discounts; cash isn't accepted on most services anyway.
  • Faster boarding. Tap-and-go cuts queue time at rush hour.
  • Eight top-up channels. Online, app, TVMs, retail, SMS, chatbot, stations, and vending machines.
  • Balance protection. Registered Blue and personal cards recover your balance if lost.
  • Loyalty rewards. NOL Plus earns points on every ride, redeemable for free trips.

👎 Disadvantages

  • Anonymous cards can't be recovered. Lose it and the balance is gone.
  • Red ticket expires in 90 days. Not suitable for anyone staying longer.

  • Top-up delay on website. Online recharges take 45 minutes to 4 hours to activate.
  • iPhone NFC not fully integrated. Apple Wallet support hasn't launched yet.
  • Limited international use. Works only inside Dubai — not other emirates.
  • Higher minimum at stations. Station top-ups now start at AED 50 (up from AED 20 in 2024).

What Is a NOL Card?

The NOL card (Arabic: نول, meaning "fares") is an electronic prepaid contactless smartcard issued by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Launched in August 2009 alongside the Dubai Metro, it was developed in partnership with Hong Kong's Octopus Cards Limited and is now the mandatory payment method for all public transport in the city.

The card handles over 1.5 million daily transactions across Dubai's integrated transport network. With 747.1 million riders served in 2024 and over 2.18 million daily riders in the first half of 2025, the NOL card covers every mode of public transport:

  • Dubai Metro — Red Line (35 stations) and Green Line (20 stations) across 7 fare zones
  • Dubai Tram — 11 stations along Jumeirah Beach Residence
  • Public Buses — All routes including intercity and feeder services
  • Water Bus, Abra & Ferry — Marine transport across Dubai Creek and beyond
  • Dubai Taxis — Government-operated and franchise taxi services
  • Parking Meters — All public parking zones across Dubai
  • 2,000+ Retail Outlets — Shops, supermarkets, and restaurants accepting NOL payments

Cash is not accepted on the metro or buses. Every passenger — whether a resident, tourist, or student — needs a valid NOL card with sufficient balance before boarding.

NOL Plus Loyalty Program

NOL Plus is the first public-transport loyalty program in the Middle East. You earn points on every ride, every top-up, and every retail payment made with your registered card. Points redeem for free trips, discounted passes, and partner offers at Emaar and Majid Al Futtaim outlets. Sign up is free — link any registered NOL card to your RTA account inside the NOL Pay app to start collecting.

The 2026 NOL System Upgrade

RTA is migrating the NOL system to a new framework called Account-Based Ticketing (ABT), with full rollout expected by the end of 2026. Under ABT, your fare is linked to your account rather than the physical chip — meaning you can tap any card, bank card, or smartphone at the gate and the system bills the correct account. Existing NOL cards will continue to work throughout the transition.

RTA Customer Support Contacts

Use these channels if your balance isn't updating or your card stops working.

  • 24/7 Hotline: Call 800 90 90 from any UAE number for NOL card issues, lost cards, or top-up problems.
  • Email: ask@rta.ae — response within 1 to 2 business days.
  • WhatsApp (Mahboub): +971 58 800 9090 — the RTA chatbot handles balance checks, top-ups, and refund requests.
  • Website: rta.ae — Contact Us form for complaints and detailed queries.
  • Customer Happiness Centers: Located at Al Barsha, Deira, Umm Ramool, and Al Kifaf — walk-in support for card replacements and refunds.
  • Social Media: @rta_dubai on X (Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook for public queries.

If an online top-up doesn't activate after 24 hours, call the hotline with your Tag ID and transaction reference number ready — support can push the pending balance to your card manually within the call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about managing and checking your NOL card in Dubai.

What is the NOL Tag ID and where do I find it?
The Tag ID is a unique 10-digit number printed on the back of every NOL card, just below the barcode or chip area. It's your card's unique identifier and is required for all online balance lookups.
How do I check my NOL card balance online?
Enter your 10-digit Tag ID into the tool at the top of this page, or visit rta.ae and go to Public Transport → NOL → Check NOL Balance. Both methods return your current balance, pending credit, and card expiry in seconds.
Can I check my NOL card balance by SMS without internet?
Yes. After a one-time registration (send your 14-digit Tag ID to 511), you can check your balance anytime by sending BAL to 511 from your registered UAE mobile number. The reply arrives within seconds and works even with zero internet connectivity.
How do I top up my NOL card in Dubai?
You can top up through eight channels: the NOL Pay app (instant, min. AED 5), the official website (min. AED 20, 45 min–4 hr activation), ticket vending machines (min. AED 20), ticket offices (min. AED 50), the S'hail app, ZOOM/ENOC stores, the Mahboub WhatsApp bot, and solar-powered machines at bus stops. The NOL Pay app is the fastest since there's no activation delay.
What are the Dubai Metro timings in 2026?
The Dubai Metro runs Saturday to Thursday from 5:00 AM to midnight, and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM. During Ramadan and major events, operating hours are usually extended. Always check the official website or app for real-time schedule updates.
What is the Gold NOL card price?
The Gold NOL card costs AED 25, which includes AED 19 in pre-loaded credit. It gives you access to the Gold Class cabin on the Dubai Metro and tram at roughly double the standard fare. A single 1-zone Gold journey costs AED 6, while an all-zones monthly pass for Gold holders is AED 700.
What is the price of a NOL Silver, Blue and Red card?
The Silver card costs AED 25 (with AED 19 credit pre-loaded), the Blue card costs AED 70 (with AED 20 credit, valid for students, seniors, and people of determination), and the Red ticket costs AED 2 and is valid for 90 days. All prices are set by RTA and are the same across every sales channel.
What happens if my balance is too low to travel?
If your balance drops below AED 7.50, you won't be able to pass through metro fare gates or board a bus. Traveling without sufficient funds can result in an AED 200 fine. It's best to always keep at least AED 15 on your Silver card so you're covered for a return journey.
Can I view my NOL card transaction history?
Yes. Log in to the official website using UAE Pass, then go to NOL Services → Check Balance and History. You can view up to 12 months of transactions including fares, top-ups, retail purchases, and parking charges. A CSV export option is also available. For a quick summary, send "NOL HISTORY" to 5110 via SMS to see your last 10 transactions.
My balance is not updating after a top-up — what should I do?
Online top-ups need to be written to the card's physical chip before they become usable. Tap your card at a metro gate or parking meter within 45 minutes to 4 hours of completing the payment. If the balance still doesn't update after 24 hours, contact customer support on 800 90 90 for assistance.
How do I check my NOL card expiry date?
Open the NOL Pay app, log in, and tap on your card — the expiry date shows directly under the balance. You can also see it on the RTA website after running a balance check, or on any TVM screen when you tap your card for a balance enquiry.
How do I check my NOL Plus loyalty points?
Log into the NOL Pay app or the RTA website with your UAE Pass, then open the NOL Plus section. Your total points, available rewards, and redemption history all appear on one screen. Points are earned automatically on every eligible ride, top-up, and retail purchase.
