NOL Card Expiry Check – How to Check Your Card Validity Date
Find out when your RTA NOL card expires and whether it's still valid for travel on Dubai Metro, buses, and tram — using nol.ae, the NOL Pay app, or a metro station kiosk.
What Does NOL Card Expiry Mean?
Every NOL card issued by RTA Dubai has a printed and digitally recorded expiry date — the date after which the card's chip is no longer recognised at fare gates, TVMs, and bus readers. An expired NOL card cannot be used for travel on Dubai Metro, RTA Bus, Dubai Tram, or any other RTA transport mode.
Card expiry is separate from balance expiry. Your stored monetary balance is preserved even after the card's physical expiry. RTA's policy ensures no passenger loses their prepaid credit due to card expiry — the balance is recoverable through card renewal. This makes the NOL card expiry check a critical step before any planned travel, particularly for occasional users or visitors returning to Dubai after a long gap.
How to Check NOL Card Expiry Date – All Methods
Method 1: NOL Card Expiry Check via nol.ae
The simplest NOL card expiry check online uses the official RTA portal. No account login is required — only your 18-digit card number.
-
1Go to nol.ae in any browser on desktop or mobile.
-
2Click "Balance Inquiry" or "Card Enquiry" on the homepage.
-
3Enter your 18-digit NOL card number (starting with 6016, printed on the card back).
-
4Submit. The result shows your current balance, card expiry date (in MM/YYYY format), card type, and active/expired status.
Method 2: NOL Card Validity Check via NOL Pay App
After linking your card in the NOL Pay app, the card dashboard displays your expiry date prominently under the card graphic alongside your balance. The app also sends a push notification 30 days before expiry, giving you ample time to renew before the card stops working at gates.
Method 3: Expiry Check at Metro Station TVM
Tap your NOL card at any Dubai Metro Ticket Vending Machine. The TVM displays current balance, last transaction, and card validity status. If the card is expired or nearing expiry, the screen shows a warning message and offers the card renewal option on-screen at select TVMs.
Method 4: Check Expiry by Looking at the Card
All NOL cards have the expiry date printed on the card face — typically in MM/YY or MM/YYYY format near the card number. This is the fastest way to check validity without any device. However, the printed date may fade on heavily used cards, making the digital check via nol.ae more reliable.
NOL Card Validity Period by Card Type
Different NOL card types have different validity durations set by RTA Dubai. Understanding your card type helps you plan renewals in advance.
| NOL Card Type | Validity Period | Renewable | Balance Preserved on Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver NOL Card | 10 years from issue date | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Gold NOL Card | 5 years from issue date | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Blue NOL Card (Student) | Linked to student/residence status | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Red NOL Ticket | Single trip / Day pass only | ✗ No | ✗ No |
| Personal NOL Card | Linked to Emirates ID expiry | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
What Happens to Your NOL Card Balance When It Expires?
When a NOL card expires, the balance stored on it is frozen — not lost. RTA Dubai's system retains the credit amount linked to the card's chip serial number indefinitely. You can recover this balance at any time by renewing the card at an RTA Customer Happiness Centre or, for Personal NOL card holders, through the online renewal process at nol.ae.
Upon renewal, the remaining balance is automatically transferred to the new card chip. There is no expiry deadline for recovering a frozen balance — RTA has confirmed that expired card balances do not have a cut-off date for reclaim, though it is advisable to renew promptly to avoid any policy changes.
How to Renew an Expired NOL Card
If your NOL card expiry check confirms the card has expired, follow these steps to renew and recover your balance:
🌐 Online Renewal (Personal Card)
Log in to nol.ae, go to Card Management, select the expired card, and follow the online renewal process. A renewal fee may apply. New card is delivered to your registered address.
🏢 RTA Service Centre
Visit any RTA Customer Happiness Centre with your NOL card and Emirates ID. Staff process the renewal on the spot and transfer remaining balance to the new card.
